Our September Speaker is Dwain A. Vaughns, II and the topic will be “Healing Through Nature Photography”!
In each piece of art Dwain creates, he shares his personal stories, while highlighting the beautiful details in the natural world often unseen. He finds purpose in his work by creating awareness of our surroundings, harnessing the healing power of nature, and being a voice for those with accessibility needs. With his camera, he heals himself. Through his photographs, with grace and gratitude, he passes that healing energy to us.
Come hear Dwain’s inspiring story of how he discovered a new way to fly and see the world from a different perspective with his camera when flying an airplane became impossible. And how he found healing in the process.
About Dwain A. Vaughns, II
Dwain is a native of Georgia. He grew up most of his life under and above the pines. At age eight he took his first flight lesson, and from that moment he knew what he was going to do the rest of his life. He became an airline pilot, but life had a different plan than forever. He suffered an injury that led to a diagnosis of a rare chronic pain condition, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS/RSD).
Flying fascinated him, but the world around him always drew his attention. Nature. Landscapes. Everything takes on a completely different perspective from 35,000 feet. Leonardo da Vinci quoted, “When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” It was there, in the sky, that he fell in love with his original muse. Birds. A perfect mesh of his past and present.
He wants to capture that frame that slows it all down. Spotlighting what happens in the seconds discarded. Full of action, but in a moment. That moment is where he now lives his life. Over the last seven years, he has been transitioning his life to now include his disability. Capturing everything around him with a completely new perspective.
Through his photographs, his intent is to draw the viewer into a relationship with time. Present with everything and everyone around them. Creating a space that harnesses connection. A connection with nature, others, and self. Experiencing an opening of the heart, and releasing the paradigm paralysis of the mind. All in an environment inclusive and accessible to every level of abilities. Leaving, aware.
