March 2, 2024: Tellus-Booth Museums in Cartersville, Georgia | Field Trip

Register for the Tellus-Booth Museums Field Trip in Cartersville, GA!

Attention PCPC Members—let’s talk Arts and Sciences! On March 2nd, we’re headed to Cartersville, just northwest of Marietta for a double-destination field trip. The Booth Western Art Museum and the Tellus Science Museum are only a 15-minute drive from each other, so we will have a fun-filled day!

The day will be split into three parts, and you can sign up for some or all of it. Prepare for 6 hours for the entire field trip, not counting travel.  Travel time is 1 hour 40 minutes each way from Peachtree Corners.

  • Tellus Museum: 10:00 am - 12:45 pm | 100 Tellus Dr, Cartersville, GA 30120

  • Lunch: 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm (including 15-minute travel time between museums). We will find a quick and reasonably-priced restaurant next to the Booth Museum.

  • Booth Western Art Museum: 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm | 501 N Museum Dr, Cartersville, GA 30120

The Tellus, which is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is a natural history and science museum comprising over 120,000 square feet. There are many parts to the museum, and with only 2-3/4 hours to tour it, it would be wise to read about all the exhibits to decide what you want to see.  One of their staff members, Megan Black, specializes in coordinating visits to both facilities on the same day.  She's helped us throughout the planning of this event and we can direct any questions to her.

The Booth is a North Georgia treasure for art lovers. The main attraction there now is an exhibit of Dorothea Lange’s photography.  Dorothea is best known for her images of Depression-era people coping with hardships.  This particular exhibit is called “Death of a Valley” about the collaborative photography essay completed by Life Magazine by Lange and Pirkle Jones in 1956. The goal of the project was to document the final year of the Berryessa Valley in Napa County California as the area was to become a lake with the construction of the Monticello Dam.

The resulting images are historical and cultural documents as well as fantastic 20th century photographs printed in vintage silver gelatin.

The whole museum is mind-blowing, so if you haven’t been there before, prepare to be impressed!
