Our July Speaker is Kevin Ames and the topic will be “Mastering Exposure and Color”!

Two of the most difficult aspects of photography for photographers to master are exposure and color, and yet they are the most fundamental elements of a photograph. Learning to control exposure and color, and how to change them intentionally to meet your vision for any given

photograph, will up your game considerably. Even professional photographers will find challenging situations where they struggle getting the exposure and color correct. Why are these elements of photography so tricky? It’s because cameras, even super-expensive ones, are not as smart as our brains. Our brain “knows” what color it expects to see – it interprets the scene. The camera only “sees” what it sees. Our eyes can see in shadows that our cameras

can’t. And so on. So we have to use our brains to out-smart our cameras.

That’s where Kevin comes in. He will explain in clear and simple terms how to get correct exposure, and how to use color management to make sure the color you get is pure. He will also discuss how to manipulate the exposure and color to achieve special effects or direct the viewer’s eye where you wish.

What will you learn:

  • Light. It’s all around us. We turn it on with the flip of a switch so we don’t bump into things in the dark. We take it for granted. We know what it is. We use it every day. We can’t live without it. And yet we don’t understand it.

  • In photography, light is the paint. The camera sensor is the canvas. Photography is creating with light.

  • Color sets the emotion for a photograph. It can be on the background, or the subject, or both. A warm color tends to be romantic. A cold color is emotionless, like a blue. Red is anger. Purple is associated with royalty.

  • In this presentation, Kevin Ames will explain and demonstrate how to master exposure and color to get the results you’re going for in your images.
