Our July Speaker is Harriet Dye and the topic will be "Photographic Composition"!
The Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, the Fibonacci Spiral — what do these things have to do with
photography??? No matter what we photograph, how we arrange the elements in a composition remains a key challenge for most of us. Even though it is often said that there are no rules in photography, familiarity with different approaches to composition can certainly help us visualize the possibilities in the scenes before us.
What do we include in or exclude from the frame? What placement will lead our viewers to our subject? How do we balance all this into a unified whole? A basic understanding of theories of composition can help us succeed in guiding our viewers through our photographs, revealing our subject and how our subject relates to the surroundings.
Let’s dive into some tips and concepts about photographic composition.
What will we learn:
Approaches to Composition
The Rule of Thirds
Leading Lines
The Fibonacci Spiral
Balance
How to visualize the possibilities
Leading the viewer through the photo
About Harriet Dye:
Harriet Dye has lived in the Atlanta area almost all her life. She is a graduate of Emory University and retired from a long career in information technology.
Intrigued by the art and the science of photography, she began photographing over 30 years ago and now combines digital technology with more classical photographic concepts. Her images have been well received in many juried exhibits. She is a longtime active member and past president of the Southeastern Photographic Society (SPS). Harriet’s ideal world is logical and orderly, and her favorite photographic subjects are scenes that lend themselves to structured compositions where precise elements find balance within a harmonious whole.
Deciding which elements to include in an image and how to relate these elements to each other is a thoughtful undertaking. Harriet hopes her photographs invite viewers into harmonious spaces where balance and order prevail.
